Around the world, over 700 million people live in what the UN defines as “Extreme Poverty” – or on less than ~$1.90 per day. And of those, almost half are in sub-saharan Africa.
The path into extreme poverty is often generational, and the path out is… challenging at best. One NGO, however, has found a successful path. And, like any good business would, they systemized the process, proved it out, scaled it up, and have continued to refine their methods.
The results speak for themselves. Since 1987, Village Enterprise has helped over 2,000,000 people out of extreme poverty specifically through entrepreneurship.
They’ve trained over 300,000 entrepreneurs and have facilitated the creation of over 100,000 businesses. And much have that has been in just the last decade as they’ve scaled up, received the results of the third party randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and worked closer with governments on expanding their impact at scale.
Out of over 225,000 nonprofits evaluated worldwide by Charity Navigator, Village Enterprise is one of only three nonprofits to have received a perfect four-star 100% rating and the only international nonprofit with a perfect score.
