Build an Email List Instead of Renting Your Reach

email

You don’t own your followers.

You rent them from an algorithm.

Smart operators quietly move them to channels they control.

In Your Business Growth Playbook, I warn founders about building a community on platforms where a policy tweak can erase your reach overnight—and I push you to earn permissioned follow-up off-platform (email, SMS, phone, even mail).

We’ve seen this movie: in January 2018, Facebook announced it would prioritize friends and family over public content from businesses and publishers. Their own statement said it plainly: “we’ll show less public content.” Pages didn’t suddenly get worse—the rules changed.

So what do savvy teams do?

They treat social as the front porch, not the house. Use posts to spark conversation, then give people a clear next step that brings them onto your list.

If your content resonates but lacks a CTA, you get engagement without results. Add explicit invitations—“grab the checklist,” “join the mini-training,” “get updates”—and make the action easy.

Why it matters (especially if you’re at 7 figures with a small team):

Reach you can count on. Email and SMS land without hoping today’s feed likes you.

Compounding ROI. HubSpot pegs email ROI around $36 for every $1 spent—hard to beat when you nurture consistently and automate wisely.

Leverage for launches and partners. A healthy list lets you educate, make offers, and (when useful) share aligned partner solutions your audience already needs. Just keep growing—and serving—the list.

How I’d implement this in a week:

  1. Ship one irresistible opt-in tied to your flagship offer (template, calculator, or quick win).
  2. Mention it in posts 2–3× this week and pin it in your profile/featured.
  3. Send a 3-email welcome: quick win → client story → soft offer.
  4. Track one metric: list growth per week. If it’s flat, fix the opt-in or the CTA—not the algorithm. (Your goal is permissioned follow-up you control.)

🧠 Key Takeaway

If your growth sits on rented land, start reclaiming it today: earn the opt-in, capture the email, build the relationship, and sell from your list. That’s how you make social media work for you, not the other way around.

What’s one opt-in your audience would grab this week?
